Doing What God Wants

If faith is essentially a resolution to be certain about things which cannot be known with certainty, shouldn't we ask why a person would resolve to do that?

There are a number of reasons which include but are not limited to, a) a sense of belonging, b) a sense of purpose, c) general social pressure to be "normal", d) ready-made answers to tough life questions, etc.

But in the end, whatever the motivations, it seems that every able-minded person chooses to do exactly what they want to do, without exception. Everyone does what they want to do and believes what they want to believe. So there are many different religions and many thousands of different sub-systems of belief within the various major religions, because anytime someone wants to do or believe something contrary to "what God wants", they just change a doctrine to suit their needs by redefining "what God wants".
